Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. Bring your insurance card, photo ID, and a list of current medications. Sometimes, it helps to make a list of questions ahead of time so you are sure to discuss everything during your visit. You can also have your medical records faxed to us at 301-731-5733.

Do I need a DEXA bone density scan?

Knowing your bone density is helpful in determining your risk factor for osteoporosis-related fractures. Bone density testing is recommended for:

  • Women over 65 years of age
  • Pre- and post-menopausal women
  • Men and women who have or had bone or spinal fractures
  • Women with hyperthyroidism

There are other risk factors that should be discussed wit your physician. DEXA scans are simple, safe and reliable 20-minutes tests, which are covered by most major health plans. There are no preparations to do the night before or the morning of the test; and there is no need to undress during the test.

At what age should I see a geriatric physician?

Typically, it is about the age of 65 or older. Geriatric physicians specialize in helping patients maintain their independence in performing daily activities. If you are facing health concerns commonly associated with the loss of independence, including memory problems, incontinence, frequent falls and side effects caused by multiple medications, a geriatrician could help you maintain your quality of life.
