Cancer Treatment

We provide state-of-the-art treatment options and support for many types of cancer. We spend time with each patient to explain the planning and treatment, answer all questions and share important information.

Cancer treatment options include:

3D Conformal Radiation Therapy

It allows for safe and accurate treatment delivery. Using information from the CT image, special computer programs design radiation beams that conform to the shape of the tumor. 3D conformal radiation therapy is offered in Lanham and Bowie.

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

It uses radiation beams of varying intensities to deliver different doses of radiation to small areas of tissue at the same time. This process allows us to increase the radiation dose to the tumor while dramatically limiting damage to healthy tissues. Also, IMRT may allow for the re-treatment of some recurrent cancers. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy is offered in Lanham and Bowie.

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

Image-guided radiation therapy involves multiple imaging of the tumor area from your exact position for treatment delivery. If the image shows a change is needed to match the tumor treatment area, your radiation oncologist can make such precise changes before treatment is delivered. Our Lanham office offers cone beam CT imaging-guided treatment of tumors located at various sites. Our Bowie office offers ultrasound-guided treatment for prostate cancer.

High-Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy

It delivers radiation directly within the tumor. Used to treat specific breast cancers, this treatment allows patients who meet carefully defined criteria to complete treatment within five days. It is also effective for prostate, gynecological, esophageal and thoracic cancers. HDR is available in our Lanham location only.

Transperineal Interstitial Brachytherapy (prostate seed implantation)

Transperineal interstitial brachytherapy is performed by a radiation oncologist and urologist. This treatment may be used alone or with external beam radiation – with or without hormone treatment – for prostate cancer. Performed at Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham.
