Doctors Community Hospital’s Nurse Residency Program Rated Highly Favorable

Lanham, Maryland – Newly registered nurses at Doctors Community Hospital rated its Vizient/AACN Residency Program as highly favorable in a 2018 survey.  This program assists these healthcare professionals transition from being students to clinical practitioners.

“We are proud that our residency program is favored among new nurses and is contributing to the future of this great profession,” stated Dr. Patricia Christensen, vice president for Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer at Doctors Community Hospital.

In addition to aiding the hospital with its recruitment and retention efforts, this program helps newly registered nurses:

  • Reinforce clinical competencies
  • Hone clinical decision-making skills
  • Develop current and future leadership behavior skills
  • Strengthen patient- and family-centered care strategies
  • Raise awareness about workplace cultures and policies
  • Advocate the importance of life-long learning

In 2017, the hospital launched its 12-month nurse residency program in collaboration with the Maryland Organization of Nurse Leaders, Inc., and Vizient.  “This program is designed to provide a smooth transition for each new graduate nurse who is moving from an academic journey into a professional nursing practice.  The evidence-based curriculum focuses on patient safety, leadership skills development and professional growth.  Additionally, our program supports new graduate nurses as they build upon their skills and confidence to navigate practice environments,” stated Dr. Lisa Burrell, director of Education and coordinator of the Nurse Residency Program at Doctors Community Hospital.

Burrell also highlighted, “Equally important, we provide the guidance and nurturing needed to motivate newly registered nurses to become future healthcare leaders while advancing overall patient-centered care throughout our community.”
