LANHAM, Md. (July 28, 2020) – Maryland’s Healthiest Businesses initiative has awarded Doctors Community Hospital (DCH) with its fourth consecutive gold-level rating for success in engaging employees toward a healthier lifestyle.

“In addition to receiving a gold-level rating, I’m most proud that we scored the highest in wellness activities in the region,” said Pam Nicholson-Flora, benefits and compensation manager at DCH. “This demonstrates our passion for prioritizing the health of our employees and ultimately benefitting our community at large.  We will continue to strive to become the healthiest employer in the state.”

The hospital joins the ranks of other Maryland businesses that promote the integrity of workplace wellness. Participating businesses are accountable for sharing their planning assessments, oversight and evaluations of programs and activities.

The hospital’s commitment to employees’ wellness includes:

  • 24-hour, low-cost gym and weekly personal training sessions for employees and family
  • Healthy food selections in cafeteria and vending machines
  • Exercise challenges and tracking
  • Wellness walks, check-ins and screenings
  • Weekly meditation sessions
  • Community garden—planting, watering, harvesting
  • Online seminars on finance, exercise, diet and mental health

(Some activities have been modified in light of the coronavirus pandemic.)

“Promoting a healthier workforce isn’t just good business, it’s our responsibility collectively as part of a larger community,” added Pam Nicholson-Flora.

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene established the Maryland Healthiest Business Program over 10 years ago based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Workplace Health Model.
