Uterine Artery Embolization
Uterine Artery Embolization Now Offered at Doctors Community Hospital
What is Uterine Artery Embolization?
Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) is a new, non-surgical procedure for treating fibroids. UAE, a minimally invasive technique, reduces the recurrence of uterine fibroids and has a much lower complication rate when compared to surgical alternatives, such as hysterectomy. Potential benefits of UAE include:
- Preservation of the uterus
- Outpatient procedure (generally 10 to 23 hours)
- Significantly less post-procedural pain when compared to hysterectomy
- Earlier return to normal life activities when compared to hysterectomy
- Decrease in pelvic pain and/or pressure when compared to hysterectomy
- Low likelihood of requiring hormone replacement therapy (estrogen)
- Virtually no blood loss
- Covered by most insurance companies
For more information about UAE or to determine if you are a candidate for this procedure, call Doctors Community Hospital’s Department of Interventional Radiology at 301-552-8513, extension 5117.
What is a fibroid?
Fibroids are benign tumors that typically develop within the muscular wall of the uterus. Seventy percent of all women and 80% of African-American women develop fibroids by their late 40’s. Fibroids are usually identified by ultrasound (sonogram) or MRI.
