daVinci Robotic Surgery

daVinci Surgical Program

Doctors Community Hospital purchased a da Vinci S Surgical System, a state-of-the-art robotic system for noninvasive surgery. The first in Prince George’s County, the system allows Doctors Community Hospital physicians to perform complex surgeries resulting in less pain, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays, fewer complications and faster return to normal activities for patients.

The da Vinci system consists of a surgeon’s console and cart with four robotic arms, miniature instruments and a 3-D high-definition endoscopic camera. The system scales, filters and translates the surgeon’s hand movements into more precise movements of the instruments, resulting in dexterity, smoothness and range-of-motion capabilities greater than the human hand.

Physicians use the system as a tool, performing the surgery 100 percent themselves, treat a wide range of conditions in specialties including thoracic, urologic, gynecologic, pediatric, transoral and general surgery.

The da Vinci system’s versatile instruments allow for less invasive surgery than conventional laparoscopic surgery, which requires long-shafted, hand-held instruments.
