Continuing Medical Education
Prologue
“Continuing medical education (CME) consists of educational activities that serve to maintain, develop, or increase knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships that a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession. The content of CME is that body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of healthcare to the public.” – ACCME Policy 82-B-3.
The CME program of Doctors Community Hospital (DCH) provides an educational program which leads to continuous advancement in professional knowledge and skills for the physician attendee. Physicians with hospital privileges at DCH constitute the primary audience for this CME series.
Program content is governed by both educational needs relating to oft-practiced/referred hospital specialties, and requisites to maintain knowledge of prevailing developments and practices. Clinical areas within DCH expertise are regularly covered in the lecture series; however, there is an acknowledged interest in broadening the scope of learning by including topics of other specializations. Hence, it is recognized that the program should reflect the fluidity of the healthcare environment as a whole. The CME program is planned by the CME Committee and uses qualified presenters drawn primarily from nearby centers of medical education and research. Opportunity for interaction between the attendees and presenters is a part of each program.
About the Program
Current CME program activity structure – focusing primarily on a live, didactic environment, with allowance for hands-on instruction, when appropriate – is deemed beneficial for the targeted audiences’ learning objectives. Lectures are held weekly on Thursday, from 12:30pm-1:30pm, in Classroom 415. For more information about scheduled programs, please check the calendar. Questions about the CME program may be directed to the Medical Staff Office, 301-552-8130.
