Executive Team

 

 

Philip B. Down, Chief Executive Officer of Doctors Community Hospital, a position he has held for the past 25 years.  He has a Masters Degree in Hospital Administration from George Washington University and a Bachelors Degree in Business from Norwich University in Vermont.  Mr. Down is a member of the American Hospital Association, the Maryland Hospital Association, the Prince George’s Business Roundtable, the Washington Board of Trade, and the Economic Club of Washington, D.C.  He formerly served for eight years as Commissioner of the Health Services Cost Review Commission, and eight years as Director of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation.  He still serves on the University of Maryland System Foundation Board.  Mr. Down and his wife Mary live in Ellicott City, MD and have two sons, Phil and Michael.

Paul Grenaldo, Exec VP and COO

Paul R. Grenaldo, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, has responsibility for the day-to-day activities of Doctors Community Hospital. After receiving his bachelor’s in business administration from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1978, he earned both his MBA and certification in health care administration from the University of Miami in Florida. Upon graduation, Mr. Grenaldo completed his administrative residency under the American Hospital Association Chair, Sr. Irene Kraus, before serving as assistant to the vice president of Medical Affairs and then director of Ambulatory Care at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. After holding key positions at a number of other organizations, he returned in to Providence Hospital in March 1996 as vice president for Marketing and Business Development. In 2005, Mr. Grenaldo was promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer at Providence. In addition to his extensive career, which includes starting his own health care management and consulting company, Practical Health Services, in May 1988, Mr. Grenaldo has served on numerous boards and is currently the head of the Finance Committee and Treasurer of the District of Columbia Primary Care Association as well as the faculty of the OPM Education Consortium.

 

DENNIS P. SCANLON, Vice President, Finance, is chief financial officer and oversees all fiscal operations at Doctors Community Hospital.  He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1969 from the University of Baltimore, Maryland.  Mr. Scanlon was the Assistant Chief Rate Analyst for the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission from 1973 until 1976.  In 1976, he became Director of Finance for Anne Arundel General Hospital, Annapolis, Maryland.  He became Controller of Provident Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland in 1984. Mr. Scanlon was the Controller, responsible for day-to-day operations of the Finance Department of Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland, from 1985 to 1988.  He joined the staff of AMI Doctors Hospital in 1988. He is a Certified Public Accountant and an Advanced Member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.  Mr. Scanlon is active in the Maryland Chapter of HFMA and served as the Maryland Chapter President for the 1996-1997 fiscal year.  Mr. Scanlon is the immediate past President of the Greenbelt Rotary Club.

 

PAULA L. BRUENING, Vice President, Nursing and Patient Care Services, is responsible for nursing services at Doctors Community Hospital.  She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1982 and her Master of Science in Nursing Administration in 1984, both from the University of North Carolina.  In 1993, she received her post-master’s certificate in nursing administration from Villanova University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  She is a member of the American and Maryland Organizations of Nurse Executives, Sigma Theta Tau, the National Honor Society for Nursing, and the Board of the Prince George’s County Literacy Council.  In 1973, after completing requirements for her Associate Degree in Nursing at Hagerstown Junior College, she began her nursing career as a staff nurse at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Maryland.  She was appointed Head Nurse in the Emergency Department at Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst, North Carolina in 1982 and Administrative Nursing Supervisor in 1984.   In 1984, Ms. Bruening was appointed Vice President of Patient Services at Loudoun Healthcare, Inc., Leesburg, Virginia.  In 1989 she became Vice President for Nursing Services at Kent General Hospital, Dover, Delaware, and in 1990, Ms. Bruening was appointed to her present position at Doctors Community Hospital.

 

CHARLENE LUNDGREN, Vice President, Human Resources, is responsible for oversight of all areas involving labor, wages and benefits for hospital employees.  Ms. Lundgren came to the Hospital in November, 1993.  She began her career in human resources at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California while obtaining her Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Los Angeles.  Subsequently Ms. Lundgren received her Master of Industrial Psychology degree from the University of Louisville.  Prior to joining the Hospital, she served as the senior human resources executive for a major law firm in the District of Columbia. Ms. Lundgren currently serves on the Council for Clinical and Quality Issues for the Maryland Hospital Association; the Focus Group on Safe Nursing Practice for the American Hospital Association; and the Annual Conference Committee for the American Society of Healthcare Human Resources Administrators.  She is an active member and a past President of Maryland Healthcare Human Resources Administrators.  Ms. Lundgren was the 2004 recipient of the American Hospital Association Outstanding Chapter Contribution Award.

 

 

GABRIEL JAFFE, M. D., Vice President, Medical Affairs, has responsibility for medical staff relations, medical staff development, and quality of care review.  He received his Bachelor of Arts degree phi beta kappa from the University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont in 1961 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, New York, in 1966.  Dr. Jaffe served as a medical intern, a medical resident, and a fellow in infectious diseases Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York, New York, from 1966 to 1973.  He was Associate Professor of Medicine at Mt. Sinai Medical School, New York, New York, from 1973 to 1974 and then served as Chief of the Division of Infectious Disease at Prince George’s Hospital Center beginning in 1974.  He became Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Doctors Community Hospital in 1993, and has served as Vice President, Medical Affairs since 1994.  Dr. Jaffe holds a board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

 

Robyn Webb-Williams

Robyn M. Webb-Williams, Vice President of Doctors Community Hospital Foundation, is responsible for raising funds for the institution’s programs and services.  Ms. Webb-Williams has served as a senior member of national non-profits, raising funds for healthcare, housing, and civil rights issues.  A native New Yorker, Ms. Webb-Williams received her Bachelor of Science Degree and Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Wagner College, in Staten Island, N.Y.  She also received paralegal certification from Long Island University, N.Y.  Ms. Webb-Williams is a member of the Association for Fundraising Professionals and serves on the Board of Directors for the YWCA of the National Capital Area in Washington, DC.
