Support Groups
A.W.A.K.E.
A.W.A.K.E. (Alert, Well And Keeping Energetic) is a health awareness support group focused on interactive discussions among patients with Sleep Apnea. This insightful support program is designed to give patients a better understanding of their existing sleep disorder and prescribed treatment. Patients will have the opportunity to share experiences on their diagnosis, treatment and how they cope with lifestyle changes. This group meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the DSE room on the 5th floor of the North Building at Doctors Community Hospital. The dates for the 2010 meetings are Wednesdays, January 27, March 17, May 19, July 21, September 15, and November 17.
Breast Cancer Support Group
The meetings present opportunities for support and information sharing. Topics of discussion include all aspects of breast cancer including mammography, biopsy and chemotherapy. The group is led by Mary Lingebach, R.N., Certified Women's Health Specialist. Meetings are scheduled for the third Tuesday of each month from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Education Center, Room 417, on the 4th floor of the North Building at Doctors Community Hospital. Capital Hospice Bereavement
Grief continues well after loss occurs of a loved one, and each individual experiences grief in unique ways. Often grief will come in intense waves, especially in the first year after a loss. Many people find it helpful to talk with others going through a similar experience. Families and loved ones of Capital Hospice patients have the option of attending drop-in support groups after a loved one’s death. Members of the community who find themselves dealing with grief also are welcome. Meetings are scheduled the first and third Thursday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Critical Care Conference Room at Doctors Community Hospital. Diabetes Circle - A Support Group
This support group meets once a month from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the DSE B Room on the 5th floor of the North Building at Doctors Community Hospital (across from the Joslin Diabetes Center). Please call for the next meeting date. This group will foster a cohesive group atmosphere with the sharing of experiences and coping mechanisms that are faced by persons with diabetes or their family members. Specialty topics, guest speakers, literature, and lots of encouragement is what you can expect from this support group. To register and for more information, please call 301-552-8661.
Hematology Support Group
If you've been diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma or another blood cancer, you can find help and hope at a monthly meeting for patients and their families. Join others living with these diseases for discussion, education and information at this group that meets monthly on the fourth Monday of each month, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Classrooms 417/416/415 on the 4th floor of the North Building at Doctors Community Hospital. Look Good, Feel Better
This group is a supportive, informative, enjoyable way for women to renew self-esteem and self-confidence after radiation and/or chemotherapy. Lymphedema Support Group
Our quarterly support group meetings offer an open and friendly forum for patients, friends, and family members to discuss ideas, give hope, provide support, and share information with others. Speakers are also invited to present Lymphedema related topics, literature, and updates. These meetings rotate dates and alternate between days and evenings, so more interested individuals have an opportunity to attend. The group meets in the DSE room (fifth floor) of the North Building at Doctors Community Hospital. The upcoming meeting dates are October 21st from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and December 10th from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (holiday party as well as support group meeting).
Sleep Disorders Awareness Group
Patients, Physicians, friends and family are invited to join our scheduled guest speakers who will address various sleep disorders and their related health risks. Come out and learn how proper treatment and healthy sleep can reduce serious health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stoke. This group meeting in the DSE room on the 5th floor of the North Building at Doctors Community Hospital from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The upcoming scheduled meetings for 2009 are Wednesdays June 24 and December 9th. Stroke Support Group
Empowering stroke survivors and caregivers. Promoting optimism, resilience, determination, and independence. Come share experiences, exchange resources, socialize, gain knowledge, problem solve, and give mutual support. We meet on the second Wednesday of every month.
