Lanham, MD – Doctors Community Hospital held its 20th annual golf invitational on May 11. This fundraising event raised $178,000 to support community health programs that help underserved, uninsured and underinsured Prince George’s County residents maintain or improve their health.
Organized by Doctors Community Hospital Foundation, this year’s golf invitational was held at Queenstown Harbor. All tax-deductible contributions benefited various community outreach programs that provide free health services. One such program is the Wellness on Wheels (W.O.W.) mobile health clinic.
A collaboration between the Prince George’s County Health Department and Doctors Community Hospital, W.O.W. will travel to various locations in the county and provide health services to people ages 16 and older. Some of the free services will include diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure and HIV screenings. Medication reviews and education will also be provided.
As stated by Robyn Webb-Williams, vice president, Doctors Community Hospital Foundation, “Given the healthcare disparities and high rates of chronic diseases in Prince George’s County, we are dedicated to pursuing various strategies to provide people access to the medical care and support they need. Because of the businesses, organizations and individuals who share our commitment and support our fundraising initiatives, we can continue to improve the health and wellbeing of the community.”
Donations from Wal-Mart and Carrollton Enterprises will fund the mobile health clinic’s first year of operation. Future fundraising activities are scheduled to contribute to the long-term financial support of this community health program. Ms. Webb-Williams stated that the next fundraising event will be the hospital’s annual gala that will celebrate the hospital’s 40th anniversary and raise additional funds for the mobile health clinic as well as other community outreach programs. The gala will be held on Saturday, November 14 at the Ritz Carlton in McLean, VA.
